Q&A ~ Am a Research Chemist. How do I get into Intelligence and/or HUMINT?

Question: I am interested in transitioning from a career in research chemistry to a career within the intelligence community. I have been studying and reading as much as I can about the intel field, but I lack any direct education or experience in the field. What is the best way to enter the field? I am most interested in HUMINT. How do I cross over from science to intel?
Answer: There are several different answers to your question depending upon perspective.
HUMINT – there is no easy way for you to crossover into Human Intelligence (HUMINT) without first joining the military and receiving formal training in this field. There are jobs perhaps where you will work with HUMINT professionals, such as in counter-IED research and testing, that could lead you into a parallel path that is HUMINT-centric.
Intelligence Analyst – as for being a military intelligence analyst see my advice about HUMINT. However, there are indeed opportunities to put your chemist background to work as a Subject Matter Expert (SME).
Someone, somewhere is looking for a chemist, or perhaps some other aspect of your background to work as an intelligence analyst.
Industry and government often hires SME intelligence analysts. Important: you must bring your knowledge with you. Seldom is training or education provided up front, except for organizational indoctrination.
Make Google your friend: search for defense industry chemist chemistry and you will begin to find a new world of opportunities.
Chemistry – Once you have identified who needs chemists in the defense world then begin to build a list of organizations and companies that use chemists. Visit their websites and put your resume out there.
Since you will be crossing over to their world then become familiar enough with their world and buzzwords that your resume echoes their needs for chemists.
Your Future: Quite possibly your future lives within the realm of JIEDDO.

SAIC Awarded Contract for Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Defense Programs

MCLEAN, VA /PRNewswire/ ~ Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE: SAI) announced today it was awarded a prime contract by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Defense Programs (OASD [NCB]) to provide professional, technical, analytical and executive-level administrative services in support of the OASD (NCB) and other components of the Department of Defense (DoD). The blanket purchase agreement (BPA) has a one-year base period of performance, four one-year options, and a contract ceiling value of $95 million if all options are exercised. Work will be performed primarily in the National Capital Region.
The OASD (NCB) is the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense for all matters concerning DoD nuclear weapons, chemical demilitarization, chemical / biological / radiological / nuclear (CBRN) defense, cooperative threat reduction and arms control. It is also directly responsible to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary, and Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics (AT&L) in matters associated with the Nation’s overall security objectives. Under the contract, SAIC will provide professional, technical, analytical and executive-level administrative services as required, including: nuclear-related technical assessments; improvement of processes and productivity; and providing management and integration of programs and projects internal to or between federal agencies. SAIC is one of three contractors eligible to compete for task orders under this contract.

Lockheed Martin Awarded $66 Million Army Contract re Infectious Diseases Research
ORLANDO, FL /PRNewswire/ ~ The U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville, awarded Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) a $66 million contract to stand up the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases Replacement Laboratory at Fort Detrick, Md.
Through the six-year contract, Lockheed Martin’s Global Training and Logistics business will help transition essential personnel and equipment to the new facility, which includes nearly one-million square feet of new space comprised of multiple labs, administrative and headquarters offices.

Through the six-year contract, Lockheed Martin’s Global Training and Logistics business will help transition essential personnel and equipment to the new facility, which includes nearly one-million square feet of new space comprised of multiple labs, administrative and headquarters offices.
“Standing up a research environment is a complex undertaking requiring expertise in medical outfitting and transition,” said June Shrewsbury, vice president of technical services at Lockheed Martin’s Global Training and Logistics business. ”Our support will help researchers advance scientific discoveries that will protect Americans from infectious diseases.”
In addition to the new laboratory at Fort Detrick, Lockheed Martin’s expertise in health care outfitting and transition services includes the Department of Defense’s new Medical Education Training Campus (METC) at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. The METC is the world’s largest enlisted military medical training campus, and provides a common training ground for the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard.
Lockheed Martin developed and led the initial outfitting and transition services for the campus’s five medical instructional facilities. In a separate initiative, Lockheed Martin will complete the outfitting and transition activities for the new San Antonio Military Medical Center in the spring of 2012.
