FAIRFAX, VA /PRNewswire/ ~ The U.S. Navy recently awarded General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems a $95.9 million contract for production and deployed-systems support of U.S. and U.K. Trident II submarine strategic weapons systems, including the SSBN fire-control system, the SSGN attack weapon-control system, the U.S. SSBN-replacement and the U.K. SSBN-successor common missile compartment. The contract has a maximum value of $225 million if all options are exercised. General Dynamics Advanced Informational Systems is a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD).

“We have a 50 year partnership with the Navy supporting strategic weapons systems and this award is a validation of our team’s performance in supporting the modernization and enhancement of the Trident program,” said Lou Von Thaer, president of General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems. “Looking forward, the introduction of the common missile compartment will be instrumental for the next generation of SSBN platforms for the U.S. and U.K. navies. Deploying a common compartment across different platforms will decrease cost and introduce more flexibility for meeting today’s mission requirements and those of the next generation of sailors.”

The Trident submarine force is the backbone of the U.S. and U.K. navies’ nuclear deterrence strategies. To ensure this capability remains at peak readiness and safety, the U.S. Navy undertook the D5 Life Extension Program in 2002 to replace aging components of the Trident II missile.

Under this contract, General Dynamics will continue to oversee elements of the D5 modernization program, including lifecycle support of the fire-control and attack weapon-control systems. The company will provide engineering support, performance evaluation, logistics, fleet documentation, reliability maintenance and training. The contract also calls for engineering support of the U.S. and U.K. common missile compartment including concept development, prototyping and initial design efforts.

Work will continue to be performed in Pittsfield, Mass., where General Dynamics currently employs over 1,100 employees.

MENLO PARK, CA /PRNewswire/ ~SRI International and Covia Labs have become strategic partners, working together to develop low-cost and secure communications, network management, and situational awareness systems for the U.S. military, public safety agencies, and commercial clients. Under the two-year agreement, the two organizations will support contracts with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Department of Homeland Defense (DHS) to provide enhanced capabilities on communication devices such as smartphones.

“Clients are asking for new capabilities and architectures that enable remote, secure, mission-based communications with and without cloud connectivity,” said Chris Lockett, program manager at SRI. ”An important need is to be able to deploy commercially developed technology within military and security applications.”

“SRI International’s long history developing innovative solutions for the U.S. military and public safety agencies makes it an ideal partner for Covia as we develop a wider array of services for these markets,” said David Kahn, chief executive officer of Covia Labs. “A longer-term objective of this relationship is to develop a low-cost solution that enables the seamless formation of secure teams across different military and public safety agencies.”

Covia Labs and SRI will deliver solutions that combine the strengths of each organization, such as SRI’s DynaMesh networking technology and Covia Labs’ secure systems integration and interoperability products. DynaMesh is a secure, mobile, independent network that leverages customers’ existing communications infrastructure to maximize public safety, security, and command and control resources, even during disconnected operations and emergency situations. It is instant and wireless, allowing improved response times and extended communication capabilities.

Covia’s patented software platform merges the data and functionality found on multiple, diverse devices and equipment into one, fully integrated system. Regardless of hardware, OS or platform, Covia can create a single interoperable system that integrates commercial devices (cell phones, laptops, etc.) to mission-specific equipment (security cameras, sensors, weapons systems). A designated administrator or multiple users can manage and utilize the resources of all devices on the platform.

For DARPA’s Transformative Apps Program, SRI will evaluate and deliver Covia Labs’ software platform coupled with SRI’s DynaMesh “coreless” and secure computing technologies to provide warfighters with the right mobile software applications. It is currently anticipated that the SRI-Covia system will be delivered in late 2011.

For DHS and the public safety market, Covia Labs will extend its communication interoperability solution to enable mission-critical voice communication over emerging Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular networks that enhance communication of high-speed data. SRI will analyze the requirements for LTE deployments and assess its use for mission critical applications for public safety operations.

This document was cleared by DARPA on December 9, 2011. All copies should carry the Distribution Statement “A” (Approved for Public Release, Distribution Unlimited). If you have any questions, please contact the Public Release Center.

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ ~ To meet the immediate needs of customers who require intelligence aircraft or ground systems to support missions for a short period of time, Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) is providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to order. Broadening its Dragon series of ISR configurations introduced last year, Lockheed Martin is expanding Net Dragon, which offers any Dragon ISR option to customers as a contracted service.

“Security budgets are decreasing, yet the demand for ISR remains constant,” said Jim Quinn, vice president of C4ISR Systems with Lockheed Martin IS&GS-Defense. “With Net Dragon, we’re able to provide the ISR capability customers need, without them having to incur the expense of owning the assets.”

Lockheed Martin’s Dragon ISR configurations offer a unique approach for customers to match mission requirements and budget to sensor, communications and airframe needs. Dragon sensor configurations are customized according to a customer’s mission requirements and are net-centric capable to enable Joint and Coalition interoperability. Cost and capability vary depending on the chosen configuration. Net Dragon allows customers to bring ISR capabilities to a region quickly and at an affordable cost.

Through this innovative contractor owned, contractor operated concept, Net Dragon customers select a Dragon configuration, which Lockheed Martin then tailors to meet the specified mission needs. Lockheed Martin then maintains and operates the needed ISR equipment, while providing the ISR capability to the customer. Different levels of operation are available. When customers are prepared to assume full control of operations, Lockheed Martin offers a transition from a contractor operated service to a customer owned system. For a Net Dragon service, customers may select any of Lockheed Martin’s Dragon ISR options:

~ Dragon Scout(TM) ~ These configurations are based on large business jet type platforms; equipped with an extensive suite of ISR systems. Dragon Scout is ideal for customers with enduring requirements and large geographic areas of interest.

~ Dragon Shield(TM) ~ Dragon Shield is ideal for customers who need an aircraft that can perform multiple missions, such as airlift and reconnaissance. Dragon Shield offers a flexible ISR mission system that can be either encased into trailer-like containers or configured onto pallets that can be rolled on and off cargo aircraft.

~ Dragon Star(TM) ~ Lockheed Martin’s Airborne Multi-Intelligence Laboratory (AML) falls within the Dragon Star category, which addresses requirements for mid-range multi-intelligence platforms such as the Gulfstream III, Havilland D-8 or Beechcraft 350. Any of these types of aircraft can be equipped with a variety of sensor combinations and multiple communications systems configured for a particular mission.

~ Dragon Stare(TM) ~ Through Dragon Stare, Lockheed Martin integrates sensor systems into aircraft or into pods attached to the exterior aircraft structure. This option is available for manned and unmanned platforms.

~ Dragon Den(TM) ~ Dragon Den ISR ground processing stations offers customers a way to process and distribute their sensor information. Dragon Den configurations vary in size, and can be as small as a computer workstation or as large as a ground system in a trailer-like shelter.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 123,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation’s net sales for 2011 were $46.5 billion.
